Fishlore Licences

What Fishlore is built from, and the terms it is used under

Fishing rules data

Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. The rules in Fishlore are transcribed from these GOV.UK pages; each rule in the app names its page and the date it was checked.

Fish identification model

The species classifier that runs on the device is the Fishial.AI fish identification model (version 0.10.2), Copyright (c) 2021 Wye Foundation - Fishial.AI Project, used under the MIT License, converted to Core ML for this app. Its backbone is Meta's DINOv2 (Apache License 2.0). The model is included in the app and runs offline; no photo leaves the device.

Species occurrence data

Which countries a species is recorded in comes from occurrence records published through GBIF.org under the CC0 and CC BY licences, counted by country: GBIF.org (18 September 2026) GBIF Occurrence Search, gbif.org/occurrence/search. The species list is Fishial.ai's public class list (MIT License). The app uses this to say a species is not normally found in your region; it never uses it to rule a species out.

Species common names

The name shown for a species, in each of the app’s eight languages, comes from the vernacular names of the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF Secretariat, CC BY 4.0), taking only names from the source checklists GBIF publishes under CC0 or CC BY: the Catalogue of Life, ITIS, TAXREF, the World Register of Marine Species, the UK Species Inventory, the IUCN Red List, the Belgian, Swedish, Dutch Caribbean and Brazilian national lists and the other CC0 / CC BY checklists on GBIF. GBIF.org (18 September 2026) GBIF Backbone Taxonomy, doi.org/10.15468/39omei.

Photographs

The two photographs on the app's first-run pages are of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and are used under CC BY 4.0: the fish at the surface by Pavel Kacl (iNaturalist, 2023) and the fish over sand by Julien Renoult (iNaturalist, 2022), both via Wikimedia Commons. Neither is altered beyond cropping.
